Hotel Particulier Interior Design
by Laurent Galle
As an interior designer with extensive experience in hotel particulier projects, we approach each commission with a clear awareness of what these buildings represent. An hotel particulier is an architectural statement of the highest order, a privately owned urban mansion whose proportions, craftsmanship and historical layers demand a response of equal calibre.
Our work is not to impose a new identity onto these spaces, but to understand what the building already expresses and to bring that expression to its fullest, most liveable form.
Our vision: interiors that honour the architecture and the life within it
Every hotel particulier carries the mark of its period: the severe elegance of the Louis XIII facade, the ornamental confidence of the Second Empire salon, the restrained geometry of the Art Deco staircase. These characteristics are not decorative accidents. They are the result of deliberate architectural choices made by designers and craftsmen of great skill, and they deserve to be treated with equivalent seriousness.
Our hotel particulier interior design process begins with a thorough reading of the building itself. We study its volumes, its original materials, the relationship between its rooms and its courtyards, the way natural light enters and moves through the day. Only from this foundation do we begin to develop a design direction.
What we are working toward in each project is an interior that feels entirely coherent: where the historic architecture and the new design work speak the same language, and where the spaces function with the ease and comfort that contemporary private life requires.
How our hotel particulier interior design process unfolds
Each project opens with a period of careful investigation. We conduct precise architectural surveys, document the condition of original features, assess any heritage protection requirements and identify both the constraints and the creative possibilities the building presents. This preparation ensures that nothing is approached without full knowledge of what exists and what it is worth preserving.
From this base, we develop the design in close collaboration with the client: floor plans, detailed sketches, three-dimensional visualisations, material and finish selections, lighting studies and furniture concepts are all prepared and presented progressively, so that every decision is made with full visual understanding of its consequence.
The renovation itself is carried out under our continuous oversight. Master plasterers, gilders, parquet restorers, bespoke joiners, marble specialists and decorative painters each contribute their expertise in coordination, working to a standard that is consistent with the significance of the building.
Hotel particulier interior design projects we have led
Our experience in hotel particulier interior design covers properties of considerable architectural distinction across Paris and beyond.
In the 7th arrondissement, a late eighteenth-century hotel particulier was restored across four floors, with each room redesigned to reflect its original function while being fully adapted for the requirements of a contemporary family. Original boiseries were carefully restored, new bathrooms were integrated without disrupting the wall elevations, and a contemporary kitchen was installed within the service wing with full respect for the existing structure.
In the Marais, an hotel particulier of the Louis XIII period underwent a complete interior renovation following a change of ownership. The brief was to create a private residence of the highest standard, with formal reception rooms on the ground floor, a private library, a principal suite and guest accommodation above, all designed within the existing room sequence and volume hierarchy of the building.
In Bordeaux, a nineteenth-century hotel particulier set within its own walled garden was redesigned as a principal family residence, with new spatial planning that improved the connection between the indoor reception rooms and the exterior terraces, while preserving every significant decorative element of the original interior.

The standard of detail that an hotel particulier demands
Hotel particulier interior design is an exercise in sustained precision. The scale of the rooms, the quality of the original craftsmanship and the expectations of those who commission this kind of work all require that every element of the design is resolved to an uncompromising level of finish.
A cornice profile that does not correspond to the period of the room, a floor finish that contradicts the weight of the architecture above it, a door handle whose proportion is slightly wrong for its setting: these are the kinds of errors that undermine an otherwise serious project. Laurent Galle’s studio is trained to see and avoid them.
It is the consistency of this attention, applied equally to the most visible features and the least conspicuous details, that gives a completed hotel particulier interior its sense of authority and ease.
What our expertise bring to your hotel particulier
Working on an hotel particulier requires simultaneous command of heritage restoration practice and the design of a genuinely luxurious private home. We know how to assess original decorative plasterwork and commission its restoration to museum standard. We also know how to design a principal bathroom suite that meets every contemporary expectation without leaving any visible trace of its installation on the historic fabric around it.
We give equal attention to the organisational logic of the property: planning for the flow between rooms, the placement of service areas, the integration of home automation and security systems, and the acoustic performance of spaces that were designed long before any of these requirements existed.
A discipline where art meets technique
Hotel particulier interior design sits at the precise intersection of architectural conservation and luxury residential design. Every decision carries both a cultural dimension, in that it affects a building of genuine historical significance, and a personal one, in that the result must serve the daily life of its occupants with comfort and grace.
We work with heritage consultants, structural engineers, and specialist craftspeople to ensure that every design proposal is both architecturally sound and technically deliverable, and that the final result reflects the full potential of the building and its new life within it.
From the drawing board to daily residence
A completed hotel particulier interior should feel settled and purposeful from the first day it is lived in. Reception rooms that hold their proportions under candlelight and daylight alike; a library that invites long hours of quiet use; a principal suite that provides genuine separation from the rest of the house: each space is designed around the specific way it will be inhabited, with no detail left to chance.

Your hotel particulier, designed with knowledge and intention
An hotel particulier interior design should be a response to the building it inhabits: informed by its period, appropriate to its proportions and refined enough to sustain the standard of living its architecture suggests. This is not a category of project that benefits from generic solutions or borrowed references.
In choosing Laurent Galle for your interior design, you are selecting a studio with genuine expertise in this specific field; one that will engage with your building seriously, develop a design that serves both its history and your present, and deliver a result that stands as a worthy continuation of the property’s life.
